Winter Fun

Cross Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is allowed in all of our parks! Bring your own skis and enjoy the parks in the winter as no trails are groomed this time of the year. Cross Country Skiing is only allowed in Forest Hills Golf Course and the formal gardens at Schoepfle Garden when there is at least 3” of packed snow

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is allowed in all of our parks. Most trails are not groomed in the winter so there are plenty of opportunities to snowshoe. As with Cross Country Skiing, snowshoeing is only allowed at Forest Hills Golf Course and the formal gardens at Schoepfle Garden when there is at least 3” of packed snow.

The metro parks also offers programs in the winter for those who want to try to snowshoeing. We provide the snowshoes and you can learn the history of this sport and try them out in several of our parks. Check our program section for dates and times.

Sledding Hills

Lorain County Metro Parks has two sledding hills. Bring your own sled and enjoy a winter afternoon in parks.

  • Vermilion River Reservation
Mill Hollow, 51211 North Ridge Rd., Vermilion
This hill is larger hill and has a semi enclosed shelter nearby to warm up in.
  • Carlisle Reservation
Equestrian Center, 13630 Diagonal Rd., LaGrange
This hill is smaller and a great place for small children to enjoy sledding.

Dog Sledding

Dog Sledding has been used for traveling and hunting for thousands of years. While dog sledding is only allowed with a permit in the metro parks, several of our larger winter programs feature local dog sledding teams. The leaders demonstrate how the sleds are used and how the dogs work together to get from point A to point B. Check out the program section to see the next sledding demonstration.
