BUTTERFLY GARDEN July 1 through September 12, 10am-4:30pm
French Creek Nature Center
The butterflies are back at French Creek Nature Center July 1 through September 12. The Butterfly Garden is open daily, 10am to 4:30pm. See butterflies as they go through a metamorphosis to change from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Some of the butterflies will be in a chrysalis (moths spin a cocoon), as we wait for them to emerge and add them to the garden. See some butterflies native to our area and also some that are not found around here. You will also be able to see butterflies close up as they flit and flutter in the garden around the garden. This is also a great opportunity for photographers to get pictures of butterflies.
Help find butterflies in the metro parks that will be released into the Butterfly Garden on several hikes. Nets are provided and please wear long pants and long sleeves.

Don't stop hiking even if the Hiking Stick Program is over. Take a challenge and participate in the 50/100 Mile Hiking Club. This hiking program runs July 1 through March 31 and is a great way to exercise in the winter months. Last year we had several people improve their health by challenging themselves to hike 50 or 100 miles. Some surpassed their goal of 100 by hiking 160 miles and 240 miles.
Get involved by participating in any hike led by metro parks staff and add up the miles on your 50/100 Mile Card, which is handed out at any hike. Miles are recorded in ½ mile increments. If you reach 50 miles you will receive a special prize. Reach 100 miles and receive a different prize. We will also reward the hiker with the most miles. Last year the most miles hiked was 251 miles. See if you can hike more this year. All cards must be turned in by April 15, 2011 to receive your reward. Call (440) 458-5121 for more information.

TrueNorth Cultural Arts closes out the 2009-2010 Theatre Season with Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon July 16 through August 1. Show times are on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here online or by calling (440) 949-5200.
Brighton Beach Memoirs was written in 1983 and is seen as a semi autobiography of Simon's childhood. Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York in 1937, the main character is fifteen year old Eugene. He deals with his family including his older brother, his parents and his mom's sister and her two daughters. The play follows the struggling family for a few days and as Eugene's father says, "If you didn't have a problem, you wouldn't live in this house." Two family members face heart disease, one has asthma, and two temporarily lose their jobs that are needed to keep the family afloat. Enjoy this play as Simon has combined the comic and seriousness of family life.
Brighton Beach Memoirs runs July 16 through August 1 at TrueNorth at French Creek Nature Center. Show times are 7:30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and on Sundays at 3pm. Call (440) 949-5200 for more information.

Are you looking for that unique gift to give the person that has everything? Adopt A Raptor at the Lorain County Metro Parks Raptor Center!
Your gift, designated to the raptor of your choice, provides the recipient with an up close and personal understanding of that particular bird, while contributing to costs of the raptor's feeding and high quality care. Adoption gifts directly support the resident raptors of the Raptor Center on the grounds of the Carlisle Visitor Center in the form of food, veterinary care and medical needs.
To Adopt-A-Raptor, choose a raptor to sponsor and a level of sponsorship and complete the “Adopt-a-Raptor" form. Adoptions are valid for a period of one year. The term “adoption" does not imply ownership rights to individuals participating in the Adopt-A-Raptor program. Please remember that the raptors, like all living creatures, may become sick or pass away during your adoption period. If this should happen, the term of your adoption will be transferred to the care of another bird at the facility. Although your adopted bird will stay at Lorain County Metro Parks Raptor Center, you may visit at any time during regular open hours, 8 am - 4:30 pm daily.
