Every Spring, the Lorain County Metro Parks increases its program offerings, gardens need tended, grass starts to grow, the golf course re-opens and visitation to the park increases. FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Facility Coordinator 1

Location: Amherst HealthPlex

Rate of Pay: $47,500 to $75,000, commensurate with experience

Job Description: Oversees and coordinates the staff, activities, programs and maintenance of the Amherst HealthPlex, which has an indoor pool specializing in aquatic activities for people with special needs, a therapy pool, aerobics rooms with fitness equipment and classes, and a unique outdoor Inclusive Playground. Responsible for hiring, training and evaluating all Park District staff at this facility.

Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sports management, physical education, business, or related field. Three years managing a public aquatic facility or equivalent. AFO or CPO, WSI, CPR certification for the Professional Rescuer, and Lifeguarding Instructor certification.

Experience in supervision. Excellent customer service and public relations skills, communication and interpersonal skills. Basic computer skills. Must be skilled in teaching learn-to-swim programs, planning swimming classes, and organizing, scheduling and directing staff. Experience with maintenance and repair of aquatic equipment, purchasing, and bookkeeping/point of sales. Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays. Experience working with people with special needs would be beneficial.

Licensing, Registration: Must possess valid Ohio driver’s license and be insurable by the park district’s insurance carrier. Mandatory background investigation and fingerprinting. Lorain County Metropolitan Park District policy prohibits hiring new employees who are tobacco users.

Public Information Officer

Cultural Arts & Nature Programmer

Location: French Creek Nature Center

Rate of Pay: $16.62 per hour

Job Description:Production and conducting a wide variety of educational programs related to the arts, nature and the cultural history of Lorain County. Involvement in temporary and perma­nent displays and exhibits. The position requires work with program and staff scheduling, as well as supervision of seasonal and part-time employees as assigned. Facility set-up and maintenance is also required. This position requires outstanding oral and written communication skills, and courteous and professional ability in working with large and diverse groups of people. The position also performs related duties as apparent and assigned.

Job Qualifications: Bachelor’s (preferred) or associate degree in the field of arts, theater or cultural history. At least two years experience in above fields preferred, with experience in developing and conducting educational programs a must. Experience in public relations, customer service, administrative support, and scheduling events and/or staff also necessary. Basic computer skills, including but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, internet, and e-mail necessary: computer-generated presentation experience (i.e., PowerPoint) highly preferred. Must be able to work evenings and weekends. Must possess valid Ohio driver’s license and undergo background check. PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Maintenance

Location: Splash Zone

Rate of Pay: $13.00 per hour

Job Description: Performs a wide range of custodial and general maintenance, repair and construction work. Sets up facilities for public and private functions. Performs mainly routine tasks in maintenance and landscaping. Empties and disposes of trash and cleans all areas of buildings. Maintains floors, restrooms, storage areas; cleans windows. Mows grass, prunes trees and bushes, shovels snow. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment. Inspects and secures buildings. Works at other park locations as needed.

Job Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and some work experience in the field. Ability to add and subtract. Basic computer skills. Able to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to carry out instructions and work alone on many tasks. Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods commonly used in custodial work. Must be able to operate a wide variety of hand and power tools. Knowledge and ability to perform grounds and building maintenance in various weather conditions. Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed. Must possess valid Ohio driver’s license and undergo background check. Food Service

Water Safety Instructor

Location: Amherst HealthPlex

Rate of Pay: $9.50 per hour

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Facility Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructor is responsible for the implementation of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Programs. This is a part time position.

Specific Job Duties:
  • Ensures the safety of their students while teaching all levels of the American Red Cross learn to swim programs
  • Maintains open communication between parents and students
  • Successfully fills out all paper work associated with the learn to swim program
  • Attends in-services as required instructs with maturity, fairness, consistent, positive and corrective feedback
  • Put away all equipment used in class
Job Requirements:
  • Current certification with the American Red Cross in Water Safety Instruction
  • Current lifeguard certification desirable

SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT

Theatre Camp Counselor

Location: French Creek Nature & Arts Center

Rate of Pay: $9 per hour

Schedule/Hours:

  • June 10 - 13: 10am-3pm
  • June 24 - 27: 9am-2pm

  • July 1 - 3: 10am-2pm

Job Summary: Under the close supervision of the Camp Director, counselors will assist with the planning, design and implementation of French Creek Theatre’s two, week-long acting camps. All staff will be expected to create and lead theatre-based curricula to large groups of youth (grades 2-8), and assist in all day-to-day camp and facility-related operations as needed. This is a seasonal, part-time position.

Requirements: Applicants should have or be working toward a degree in theatre, performance or other related field(s). Theatre performance experience. Experience working with children. Reliable transportation.

Conservatory Intern

Location: Miller Nature Preserve

Rate of Pay: The wage range for this position starts at $8.55 per hour and will be based on experience and abilities.

Schedule: This is a three to six-month opportunity and up to 39 hours per week.

Starting Date: September 2019

Learning Opportunity: Learn conservatory general maintenance; care of various plant collections, pest identification, pest control, integrated pest management, pruning techniques, repotting/splitting of plants, bed aeration, watering techniques, fertilizing procedures, become familiar with park operations, and other related concepts.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the greenhouse technician and park manager, park service trainees will assist in the daily care of the conservatory and plant collections and may also assist with presenting general plant information to park patrons.

Qualifications: Applicants must be detail-oriented and have the ability to accurately follow through on work assignments without close supervision. A current, valid driver’s license and insurable driving record are necessary. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and capable of performing outdoor physical work. Preferably candidates are enrolled in an educational program pursuing a degree in horticulture, botany, landscaping, plant science or related field.

Outdoor Aquatics Intern

Location: Intern will will work at various parks/locations

Rate of Pay: $9.00 per hour

Date Range: Late April - Fall (Up to 39 hours per week)

Job Description: This Outdoor Aquatics position will assist with planning and facilitating a variety of on-water recreational programs, camps and events held at various on and off-site locations throughout the spring, summer and fall season. Applicants will also perform various administrative tasks, as well as equipment repair and maintenance. Sailing, power boating, personal watercraft, and paddling experience are highly preferred. Applicants required to possess the Ohio Boaters Education Course certification, or be available to complete course before the beginning of season. CPR/First Aid required. Lifeguarding and Boating certifications (such as ACA certifications) are highly recommended, but not required. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

Applicants must have excellent organizational and communication skills. Must be able to lift 60 pounds over head and be outside for hours at a time. Other applicable skills include Microsoft Office proficiency and customer service expertise. Other duties as assigned. Lorain County Metro Parks District policy prohibits hiring new employees who use tobacco.

Goals: By the end of the season, the staff person in this position will gain a tremendous amount of experience working with boating participants of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. There is also the opportunity to gain experience working with several types of boats and boating equipment. In addition, this staff person will utilize a variety of teaching techniques, and have the opportunity to design new boating programs.

Expectations: At the end of the season, this position will be evaluated based on ability to complete several important tasks. Evaluated tasks listed below:

  • Organize and perform program administrative tasks
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of a wide inventory of boating equipment
  • Professionally and positively communicate with boating program participants and other park patrons
  • Facilitate a wide variety of boating programs
  • Work as a team with seasonal staff and full-time employees. Maintain a positive attitude throughout summer
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Lifeguards

Splash Zone Aquatic Center and Amherst HealthPlex are always looking for responsible individuals with good communication and swimming skills to be a lifeguard. Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certifications. In the summer months we also look for lifeguards for Lakeview Beach. In addition to the certifications mentioned above, lifeguards at Lakeview Beach must complete Waterfront Lifeguard certification upon hiring.

Park Aide

The Park Aides perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs in maintaining and improving Park District resources, including but not limited to: Clean park facilities; routine landscaping tasks (mowing, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, etc.); litter and trash pick-up; operate vehicles and equipment; repair building equipment, painting and staining.  Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.
