Every Spring, the Lorain County Metro Parks increases its program offerings, gardens need tended, grass starts to grow, the golf course re-opens and visitation to the park increases. FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Ranger Specialist

Location: Splash Zone

Rate of Pay: $30,000 to $50,000 annually

Job Description: Assists with the development, implementation, coordination and administration of the park ranger law enforcement program.  Renders aid, assistance and information services to park visitors. Protects and preserves the land and facilities of the Park District. Enforces Park District rules and regulations and the laws of the State of Ohio. Performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs in maintenance, and related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Associate’s degree in parks and recreation, natural resources, ranger services, or equivalent experience. Valid Ohio Peace Officer Training certification, three years’ experience in law enforcement (parks-related experience preferred), or equivalent. Work experience or education in the field of natural resources preferred. Excellent communication skills. Valid Ohio driver’s license. Applicants must be 21 years of age and are subject to an extensive background investigation. Applicants must be available to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends. Service Ranger

Rate of Pay: $16.93 per hour.

PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Park Aide/Front Desk

Location: Vermilion River Reservation/Carriage Barn

Rate of Pay: $8.15 per hour

Dates: Year-round Temporary Position

  • Up to 28 hours per week

Job Summary: This Park Aid temporary position will assist with coverage of the building hours at the Vermilion River Reservation’s Carriage Barn. Coverage includes answering phones, providing assistance to visitors at the Carriage Barn, processing facility reservations, cleaning and decorating, assisting with outdoor landscaping and plant upkeep, and setting up the Meeting Room for rentals. This staff member will also assist with program preparation and facilitation of various on and off-site programs, including the Mill Hollow Summer Concert Series. In addition, other responsibilities include upkeep and programs at the Benjamin Bacon Museum.

Children's Garden Attendant

Location: Schoepfle Garden

Rate of Pay: starting at $8.15 per hour, based on experience, part-time

Job Summary:Under the general direction of the manager and supervisor of the park,  the Children's Garden Attendant will  supervise public activities in the children's garden including operating the carousel, performing light grounds maintenance and gardening, assisting or leading public and requested programming, assisting in general operation of Schoepfle Garden.  Temporary position.

Program Reservationist

Location: Splash Zone

Rate of Pay: $11.22 per hour

Job Description: Performs a variety of clerical and secretarial duties including typing corres¬pondence, and taking reservations. Collecting money, daily revenue balancing, greeting visitors, answering phones, and maintaining files, records and reports. Performs a wide range of program and staff scheduling, along with informational and preparatory support for programming.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of secondary education; some college work preferred in the field of administrative support, public relations, customer service, data entry, point-of-sale accounting, or equivalent. Minimum of two years work experience in the prior mentioned field. Strong clerical, customer service, reservation-taking, and organiza-tional skills necessary. Experience in collection of money, balancing, scheduling and public service preferred.

Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and undergo background check. Must obtain CPR certification within two months of hire. Lorain County Metro Park District policy prohibits hiring new employees who use tobacco.

Water Safety Instructor

Location: Mercy Health & Recreation Center

Rate of Pay: $9.50 per hour

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Facility Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructor is responsible for the implementation of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Programs. This is a part time position.

Specific Job Duties:
  • Ensures the safety of their students while teaching all levels of the American Red Cross learn to swim programs
  • Maintains open communication between parents and students
  • Successfully fills out all paper work associated with the learn to swim program
  • Attends in-services as required instructs with maturity, fairness, consistent, positive and corrective feedback
  • Put away all equipment used in class
Job Requirements:
  • Current certification with the American Red Cross in Water Safety Instruction
  • Current lifeguard certification desirable

SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT

Recreational Aquatics Intern

Date Range: Early May - Fall (Up to 39 hours per week)

Rate of Pay: $8.50 per hour

Job Description: This Recreational Aquatics position will assist with planning and facilitating a variety of on-water recreational programs, camps and events held at various on and off-site locations throughout the spring, summer and fall season. Applicants will also perform various administrative tasks, as well as equipment repair and maintenance. Sailing, power boating, personal watercraft, and paddling experience are highly preferred. Applicants required to possess the Ohio Boaters Education Course certification, or be available to complete course before the beginning of season. CPR/First Aid and Lifeguard certifications are highly recommended, but not required. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

Goals and Expectations: By the end of the season, the staff person in this position will gain a tremendous amount of experience working with boating participants of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. There is also the opportunity to gain experience working with several types of boats and boating equipment. In addition, this staff person will utilize a variety of teaching techniques, and have the opportunity to design new boating programs.

Expectations: At the end of the season, this position will be evaluated based on ability to complete several important tasks. Evaluated tasks listed below:

  • Organize and perform program administrative tasks
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of a wide inventory of boating equipment
  • Professionally and positively communicate with boating program participants and other park patrons
  • Facilitate a wide variety of boating programs
  • Work as a team with seasonal staff and full-time employees. Maintain a positive attitude throughout summer
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Natural Resource Technician (Park Service Trainee)

Location: Park District-wide

Rate of Pay: $8.15 per hour

Job Description: Assists in the implementation of Natural Resource Management Plans for Park District reservations. Assists with wetlands maintenance, nest box upkeep, invasive plant control, brush clearing, and field mowing. Assists with prescribed burn crew. Works individually or with park staff and volunteers in all weather conditions. Performs related maintenance tasks as apparent or assigned. This position may be used to fulfill internship requirements.

Job Qualifications: Must have a strong interest in resource management, forestry, wildlife, fisheries, or related field. Individuals either possessing or working towards a degree in one of these fields will be given preference. Must have a working knowledge of local flora and fauna. Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and be insurable (a CDL would be beneficial). Must have experience with power tools, agricultural equipment or construction equipment. Must be willing to apply herbicides within park natural areas.

Naturalist Intern

Location: Report to French Creek Nature & Arts Center (work at various parks throughout spring/summer)

Rate of Pay: Starting at $8.10 per hour

Dates: TBD (Up to 39 hours per week)

Job Summary: This Naturalist Intern position will assist with planning and facilitating a variety of interpretive nature/outdoor adventure programs, camps, and events held at many different LCM parks throughout the summer season. Applicants will also perform many administrative duties relevant to the camp daily functions. Applicants must have experience with children aged preschool through 12th grade. In addition, applicants should possess an interest in nature and conservation and general local flora/fauna knowledge. A background in education, both formal and/or informal, is a plus. Outdoor recreation experience also preferred. CPR/First Aid and Lifeguard certifications are highly recommended, but not required. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

Expectations: At the end of the summer, interns will be evaluated based on ability to complete important camp tasks. Evaluated tasks listed below:

  • Organize and perform camp administrative tasks
  • Help to create and facilitate daily camp outlines

Horticultural Intern

Location: Schoepfle Garden

Rate of Pay: $8.10 - $10 per hour, based on experience and education

Job Summary:Under the general direction of the assistant horticulturalist and senior naturalist, the Horticultural intern will participate in the ongoing maintenance of Schoepfle Garden including 20 acres of formal gardens, and the accompanying visitor areas and woodlands. Maintenance duties can include pruning, mowing, trimming, and chemical applications under supervision. Public programming and visitor services will be a varying part of this position based upon park needs, applicant profile and internship requirements. This position may be used for college credit and internship requirements as it meets the needs of the Lorain County Metro Parks. Housing is available as part of student compensation while employed. Splash Zone Aquatic Center and Mercy Health & Recreation Center are always looking for responsible individuals with good communication and swimming skills to be a lifeguard. Park Aide

The Park Aides perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs in maintaining and improving Park District resources, including but not limited to: Clean park facilities; routine landscaping tasks (mowing, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, etc.); litter and trash pick-up; operate vehicles and equipment; repair building equipment, painting and staining.  Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.

Golf Aide

The Golf Aides maintains golf course equipment and the grounds of the Forest Hills Golf Course.  Performs mainly routine tasks in maintenance and landscaping including but not limited to: cleans park facilities, performs routine landscaping tasks, assist in daily course set-up.  Previous knowledge of golf course equipment and duties preferred.  Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.
