Every Spring, the Lorain County Metro Parks increases its program offerings, gardens need tended, grass starts to grow, the golf course re-opens and visitation to the park increases. FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Cultural Arts Manager

Rate of Pay: $43,000 to $67,500 salary (Commensurate upon experience)

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Assistant Director, administer and coordinate theatre, arts and history programs and events. Manages budget, personnel, facilities and educational programs. Educates the public on theatre and arts and creates public awareness of park services and facilities.

Qualifications: Bachelor (preferred) or associate degree in the field of arts, theater, or cultural history. At least five years' experience in the above fields is preferred, with experience in developing and conducting educational programs a must. Experience in public relations, customer service, administrative support, and scheduling events and/or staff also necessary. Basic computer skills, including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, internet, and e-mail necessary. Computer-generated presentation experience (i.e., PowerPoint) highly preferred. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Licensing, Registration: Must possess valid Ohio driver’s license and be insurable by the park district’s insurance carrier. Mandatory background investigation and fingerprinting. Lorain County Metropolitan Park District policy prohibits hiring new employees who are tobacco users.

Park Manager

Outdoor Experiences Manager

Assistant Park Mechanic

Rate of Pay: $17.78 per hour

Job Description: The Assistant Park Mechanic assists the Fleet Manager with planning, directing, coordinating and maintaining the fleet, including vehicles, equipment and other park-related equipment. The Assistant Park Mechanic also performs a wide range of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled tasks in the field of construction, and maintenance and repair.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of high school or GED. Continuing education in the field (vocational program preferred), related field or equivalent, and four (4) years’ experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance, with experience in supervision. Experience with maintenance and repair of equipment, directing others, assigning work orders, scheduling and purchasing. Valid Ohio driver’s license with CDL and appropriate endorsements for trailer and bus operation. New employees must satisfactorily complete a background check. Water Safety Instructor

Location: Amherst HealthPlex

Rate of Pay: $9.50 per hour

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Facility Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructor is responsible for the implementation of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Programs. This is a part time position.

Specific Job Duties:
  • Ensures the safety of their students while teaching all levels of the American Red Cross learn to swim programs
  • Maintains open communication between parents and students
  • Successfully fills out all paper work associated with the learn to swim program
  • Attends in-services as required instructs with maturity, fairness, consistent, positive and corrective feedback
  • Put away all equipment used in class
Job Requirements:
  • Current certification with the American Red Cross in Water Safety Instruction
  • Current lifeguard certification desirable

SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT

Conservatory Intern

Location: Miller Nature Preserve

Rate of Pay: The wage range for this position starts at $8.55 per hour and will be based on experience and abilities.

Schedule: This is a three to six-month opportunity and up to 39 hours per week.

Learning Opportunity: Learn conservatory general maintenance; care of various plant collections, pest identification, pest control, integrated pest management, pruning techniques, repotting/splitting of plants, bed aeration, watering techniques, fertilizing procedures, become familiar with park operations, and other related concepts.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the greenhouse technician and park manager, park service trainees will assist in the daily care of the conservatory and plant collections and may also assist with presenting general plant information to park patrons.

Qualifications: Applicants must be detail-oriented and have the ability to accurately follow through on work assignments without close supervision. A current, valid driver’s license and insurable driving record are necessary. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and capable of performing outdoor physical work. Preferably candidates are enrolled in an educational program pursuing a degree in horticulture, botany, landscaping, plant science or related field.

Natural Resource Technician (Park Service Trainee)

Location: Park District-wide

Rate of Pay: $8.55 per hour

Job Description: Assists in the implementation of Natural Resource Management Plans for Park District reservations. Assists with wetlands maintenance, nest box upkeep, invasive plant control, brush clearing, and field mowing. Assists with prescribed burn crew. Participates in data collection and assists with various resource monitoring projects. Works individually or with park staff and volunteers in all weather conditions. Performs related maintenance tasks as apparent or assigned. This position may be used to fulfill internship requirements.

Job Qualifications: Must have a strong interest in resource management, forestry, wildlife, fisheries, or related field. Individuals either possessing or working towards a degree in one of these fields will be given preference. Must have a working knowledge of local flora and fauna. Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and be insurable. Experience with power tools, agricultural equipment, or construction equipment is a plus. Must be willing to apply herbicides within park natural areas.

Outdoor Aquatics Intern

Location: Intern will will work at various parks/locations

Rate of Pay: $9.00 per hour

Date Range: Late April - Fall (Up to 39 hours per week)

Job Description: This Outdoor Aquatics position will assist with planning and facilitating a variety of on-water recreational programs, camps and events held at various on and off-site locations throughout the spring, summer and fall season. Applicants will also perform various administrative tasks, as well as equipment repair and maintenance. Sailing, power boating, personal watercraft, and paddling experience are highly preferred. Applicants required to possess the Ohio Boaters Education Course certification, or be available to complete course before the beginning of season. CPR/First Aid required. Lifeguarding and Boating certifications (such as ACA certifications) are highly recommended, but not required. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

Applicants must have excellent organizational and communication skills. Must be able to lift 60 pounds over head and be outside for hours at a time. Other applicable skills include Microsoft Office proficiency and customer service expertise. Other duties as assigned. Goals: By the end of the season, the staff person in this position will gain a tremendous amount of experience working with boating participants of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. There is also the opportunity to gain experience working with several types of boats and boating equipment. In addition, this staff person will utilize a variety of teaching techniques, and have the opportunity to design new boating programs.

Expectations: At the end of the season, this position will be evaluated based on ability to complete several important tasks. Evaluated tasks listed below:

  • Organize and perform program administrative tasks
  • Assist with the organization and maintenance of a wide inventory of boating equipment
  • Professionally and positively communicate with boating program participants and other park patrons
  • Facilitate a wide variety of boating programs
  • Work as a team with seasonal staff and full-time employees. Maintain a positive attitude throughout summer
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Seasonal Naturalist Intern

Location: Intern will report to French Creek Nature & Arts Center (will work at various parks throughout spring & summer)

Rate of Pay: Starting at $8.55 per hour

Job Summary: This Naturalist Intern position will assist with planning and facilitating a variety of interpretive nature/outdoor adventure programs, camps, and events held at many different LCM parks throughout the summer season. Applicants will also perform many administrative duties relevant to the camp daily functions. Applicants must have experience with children aged preschool through 12th grade. In addition, applicants should possess an interest in nature and conservation and general local flora/fauna knowledge. A background in education, both formal and/or informal, is a plus. Currently enrolled in college courses related to, or possess a degree in the following areas is preferred: environmental education, outdoor recreation, environmental science/studies, natural resources, history, or related degrees. Outdoor recreation experience also preferred. CPR/First Aid and Lifeguard certifications are highly recommended, but not required. Weekend and evening hours may be required.

Children's Garden Attendant

Location: Schoepfle Garden

Seasonal Park Aide

Location: Schoepfle Garden

Rate of Pay: $8.60 per hour. This is a seasonal opportunity that will entail approximately 20 – 39 hours per week. Start date is flexible throughout the year, hours available primarily from March to November.

Lifeguards

Splash Zone Aquatic Center and Amherst HealthPlex are always looking for responsible individuals with good communication and swimming skills to be a lifeguard. Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certifications. In the summer months we also look for lifeguards for Lakeview Beach. In addition to the certifications mentioned above, lifeguards at Lakeview Beach must complete Waterfront Lifeguard certification upon hiring.

Park Aide

The Park Aides perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs in maintaining and improving Park District resources, including but not limited to: Clean park facilities; routine landscaping tasks (mowing, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, etc.); litter and trash pick-up; operate vehicles and equipment; repair building equipment, painting and staining.  Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.

The Golf Aides maintains golf course equipment and the grounds of the Forest Hills Golf Course.  Performs mainly routine tasks in maintenance and landscaping including but not limited to: cleans park facilities, performs routine landscaping tasks, assist in daily course set-up.  Previous knowledge of golf course equipment and duties preferred.  Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.
